Buckbeak (later renamed Witherwings) is a hippogriff, a magical beast in the fictional Harry Potter book series by J. K. Rowling.

Buckbeak, along with eleven other hippogriffs, is introduced during one of Hagrid's Care of Magical Creatures classes. Hagrid explains that hippogriffs are very calm, powerful giants, but are touchy creatures and demand respect. One must bow and keep eye contact before approaching. Harry successfully approaches Buckbeak, who allows him to ride him around the paddock. He still must bow on subsequent encounters, though Buckbeak apparently had taken a great liking to Harry from then on.

In the stories, Buckbeak is an enormous animal. Hippogriffs are bred, and are born with the appearance of a hybrid of bird and horse. Buckbeak looks to be a fusion of a giant Harpy Eagle and a gray horse, with a wingspan of nearly 20 feet. Horses generally weigh between 1300 and 2000 pounds, but because of his bird characteristics, he is lighter at just under half of a ton.[citation needed]

Draco Malfoy, in an arrogant attempt to show up his school nemesis, endeavours to approach Buckbeak as well. It becomes obvious that the Slytherin neither listened to nor cared about Hagrid's warnings about the hippogriffs' tetchiness, as he makes contemptuous remarks about Buckbeak. Quickly angered, Buckbeak slashes Draco's arm with his claws.

Pretending to be injured much more severely than he truly is, Draco persuades his father, Lucius Malfoy, to use his political power to sentence Buckbeak to death. Hagrid's numerous appeals fail, and Walden Macnair of the Committee for the Disposal of Dangerous Creatures comes to Hogwarts to execute Buckbeak. With the use of a time-turner, Harry and Hermione free Buckbeak and rescue Sirius Black from the tower in which he was being held before his own execution. Sirius escapes with Buckbeak and flies to safety.

During most of Harry's fourth year, Sirius and Buckbeak hide in a cave in the mountains above Hogsmeade. After this, they move to Number 12 Grimmauld Place, whereupon Buckbeak stays in Sirius's mother's former room.

In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Harry inherits Buckbeak, and allows Hagrid to look after it again. To avoid suspicion from the Ministry of Magic, it is given the alias Witherwings.

A fiercely loyal creature, Buckbeak chased away Professor Snape from Harry by slashing his claws at him at the Battle of Hogwarts. This was also portrayed in the movie “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” in which Harry was saved by Buckbeak from Professor Lupin in his werewolf form.

The withers are the highest part of a horse's back, just above the shoulders. Witherwings, being a hippogriff, has wings on his withers, which explains the choice of name.

In the Prisoner of Azkaban film, during the scene where we first meet Buckbeak the Hippogriff, just after Ron pushes Harry forward there is a shot of the animal defecating. The CGI team believes this might be the first example of a CGI animal doing this, but the BBC miniseries Walking with Dinosaurs (1999) did so 5 years before.

To tell the truth i think that nobody actually knows what is so great about millions of HP Fan sites.
I think it is all to do with how it looks. Every Fan Site looks different (if the owners didn't copy it) in how it function and how the layout is and that makes a Fan Site get visitors. So why why why go make a fan site if there is millions. Why, because you can and you want people on your site and lots of things. But will you get visitors to your site. No and Yes, because if you make a crap fan site nobody will even care about your site, because everybody goes to J.K. Rowlings' Fan Sites and that is just the best fan sites that gets to be a site like that, but then anyone can have a site like that. Everyone starts little and then grows. Mugglenet started small and then grew into a magical world and all the Floo Network sites (The Leaky Cauldron, HP Lexicon, etc) also started small. So if you have a fan site but is to shy because of all this big sites. Then post a comment here and let all the other people see that magical site. (and just to make you happier i will personally visit all of that sites) I read somewhere that the more links there is on other sites about your site the more higher you will be placed on a search engine (Google, etc).
Oh and please put a link on your site to this blog. Thank You. I hope you loved this post. If you want to email me then my email address is on the bottom of this blog. There you will also find this blog's RSS feed url.

Last year, we reported that Warner Brothers may be close to finalizing a deal with the Disney Company to create a Harry Potter themed attraction. This was revealed at JimHillMedia.com. Today more information has resurfaced on the website about the possible Potter/Disney project.

Jim Hill reveals that a 'Letter of Intent' has been signed by J.K. Rowling after months of negotiations which would allow Disney "the right to begin preliminary development of a theme park-related project featuring the Harry Potter characters."

However, a 'Letter of Intent' is defined by investorsworld.com as follows:

Quote:
A letter from one company to another acknowledging a willingness and ability to do business ... A letter of intent is not a contract and cannot be enforced, it is just a document stating serious intent to carry out certain business activities.

Therefore, it is still possible that the project may fall through. Jim Hill goes on to observe:

Quote:
And given Ms. Rowling's reputation for being one tough negotiator (Case in point: When Warner Bros. was getting ready to produce the very first "Harry Potter" film, the studio insisted that at least one actor in the cast be a "name." To be specific, Warners wanted Robin Williams for the role of Hagrid. But J.K. absolutely refused to allow the studio to cast this Academy-award winning comedian as Hogwart's big-hearted gamekeeper. And given that one of the terms of the sale of "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" movie rights was that the author had final approval over the film's cast ... Well, that's how Robbie Coltrane wound up filling Hagrid's over-sized boots) ... Just because Disney now has a letter of intent with J.K. Rowling doesn't mean that you should plan on queuing up for "Harry Potter: The Ride" anytime soon.
